Gordon Woods dies at the age of 81

A former Owen Sound fire chief and longtime firefighter in the Scenic City has passed away.

With family by his side, Gordon Woods died on Friday at the age of 81.

Woods served in the Owen Sound Fire Department for 30 years, his last 12 as fire chief before retiring in 1995.

He was also a longtime chair of the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame.

Fire Captain Ken Lawrence worked for the fire department during Woods' time as fire chief, and remembers him fondly.

"He's regarded as a very well-liked and very respected fire chief by the firefighters that worked here and also by the community," Lawrence says. "He really built this fire department, always looking at making strides to make it better for the community."

A funeral service for Gord Woods will be held on Friday, April 20, at 11 a.m. in the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home Chapel.
