Port Elgin native Lori Hamer is London's first ever woman fire chief.

Hamer took over the role at a rough time for the fire department, which was recently investigated on claims of harassment.

The 47-year-old stepped into the role of Interim Fire Chief back in March after the sudden departure of former Chief John Kobarda.

Her career in firefighting has not been on the front lines, but rather in communications and management.

Hamer was announced as the new chief of the London Fire Department on Monday, July 9th.

Hamer says ''when I came in [to the station] in March, it was an extremely toxic environment and I've spent the last few months talking to a lot of the employees and what I'm getting right now is the sense that people are committed to working together to move forward for a workplace that's free of discrimination and harassment and a safe workplace to come to''.

She says growing up in a small town helped her become who she is. She credits Port Elgin for making her a ''very social person'', and says that helps her as her role is very communication oriented.

Hamer says that she is working with employees at the London Fire Department to help make it a great place to work again. She says she looks forward to whatever the future holds.
