8th Annual Inside Ride Raising Funds for Local Families

Owen Sound | by Bayshore News Staff

This years goals are to provide 660 weeks of free hospital parking

The 8th Annual Brendan Rourke Memorial Inside Ride takes place at OSDSS on April 17th.

The goal is to raise $30,000 that will help offset the cost of hospital parking to more 200 families with children under 19 from our region.

As of April 11th the fundraiser brought in over $13,000, more 290 weeks of free parking.

Over the past 8 years residents of Grey-Bruce pulled in over $180,000 through the Inside Ride.

Students collect most of the donations. A team of 6 receives a goal of $300. Eventually students receive the payoff for their hard work through the afternoon event.

Neal Rourke, the event co-chair as well as the father of Brendan Rourke who the event is named after, spoke about the energy in the room when the students begin their 10 minute laps on the stationary cycles.

"It may just be the most zany, wildest, craziest controlled chaos you'll ever see." Rourke said.

During the event there will be upwards of 40 stationary bikes, with 6 students at each. Once the DJ starts playing music students will cycle through a 10 minute lap each. Prizes will be handed out at the end for students who have the best costume, most money raised and by the team that cycled the furthest

Rourke who has personally spearheaded much of the effort since his son passed away in 2012. Brendan Rourke was able to participate in the first inside ride before he passed away in December of 2012.

Since then the fundraiser event, named in his honor, has provided students the opportunity to help families and follow students in need. This year families in need will receive assistance paying for week long parking passes at various hospitals when they are there for treatments. Even with a deal made by Childcan these passes can still cost $45 a week.

The funds raised from this year's inside ride will go towards covering as much of these parking costs as possible.
