Memories of January 8, 2000
Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The NFL Playoffs have commenced with Wild Card Weekend.
The Buffalo Bills are not among those competing, missing the playoffs for the 17th straight season.
Recently, using the Bills as the base, a sports station wondered, " do you remember where you were the LAST time Buffalo played a playoff game ?
Yes I do....
On Saturday January 8th in the year 2000 ( remember Y2K ? ) the Bills were at Nashville to meet Tennessee while the Owen Sound Platers were having an off day on their annual Eastern road trip based in Kingston.
That football game is famous for the " Music City Miracle ".
After the Bills took a 16-15 lead with 16 seconds to play, Frank Wycheck fielded the ensuing kickoff for the Titans and threw a lateral pass across the field to Kevin Dyson who scampered 75 yards for the game winning TD.
As I sat in Shoeless Joe's in Kingston, I thought this play was amazing.
But you know what stood out most on that day ?
That night, with the Platers not playing but staying in Kingston, I went to see an OHL game between the Frontenacs and the Barrie Colts.
At the time, Sean Avery played for Kingston and Mike Jefferson played for Barrie.
Suffice it to say, I've never seen more activity or noise prior to faceoffs than what those two generated on their draws.
Kingston beat Barrie 5-3 that night in a game I found more memorable and entertaining than the " Music City Miracle " game hours before.
