Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
I had a number of options last Sunday for Minor Hockey games to watch.
The Grey Bruce Highlander Minor Midgets were playing Game 2 of their SCTA Championship with the Oakville Rangers who are # 2 in the most recent OHL Cup rankings.
Meanwhile, the Owen Sound Garb & Gear Attack Minor Peewee told me about their playoff game with Milton taking place at the same time.
I elected to go to Durham to see the Highlander Major Atoms play Southern Tier and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
I've watched the Atom Highlanders practice most of this season as they generally have the ice at Meaford before the Knights have their GMHL home games.
I've been impressed with their practices, particularly the uptempo pace, plus the drills and skill development that has taken place.
But making a practice drill pay off in a game..... that's something altogether different.
Thus I was delighted when the Highlanders executed an excellent play late in the game.
Trailing the Admirals 4-3, Grey Bruce won the defensive draw, quickly went D to D behind their net and whipped it up the right wing boards where the winger suddenly found himself on a 2 on 1 break. The right winger passed the puck across to the breaking teammate on the left side who beat the Southern Tier goaltender for the tying marker.
All those drills, all that time in practice, paid off with a perfectly executed draw, zone exit & 2 on 1.
I'm sorry I missed the AAA Minor Midget Game and the OMHA Minor Peewee contest, but the Atom Highlanders were a very good choice for a Sunday afternoon in Durham.
