Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The Owen Sound Attack are in Erie tonight to meet the Otters secure in the knowledge that they have an Ontario Hockey League playoff berth in their pocket.
The mathematical possibility exists that Owen Sound could finish anywhere between 4th & 8th in the OHL's Western Conference, but the most likely scenario is that they will end up 4th, or 5th, and meet the London Knights in the opening round of the playoffs some 3 weeks away.
The playoff berth for the Attack represents an accomplishment both in the short term and the long term.
In the short term, this Attack club lost 13 of 14 in one stretch and dangled on the brink of being bypassed for the post season just 2 months ago. Now, when healthy & focused, they look very solid.
And in the long term, the post season spot marks the 8th consecutive year that Owen Sound has posted at least 30 wins and made the playoffs.
Or let's put it another way; since the 2010-11 season, Owen Sound is one of just 4 teams to make the playoffs every year.
In the East, Oshawa & Niagara have been in the post season over the same period of time.
And in the Western Conference, the generally highly competitive Western Conference, only one other team has been to the post season along with the Attack for the last 8 years.......London.
While the playoff berth is confirmed, the playoff matchup isn't.
But one can't help wonder if the Owen Sound Attack are preparing for Erie tonight or the Knights somewhere down the road.
