Bench Talk / Off The Wire

The Best

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Earlier this month, the National Hockey League Players' Association revealed the results of  their Player Poll.

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins received almost 30 per cent of the votes in the category of " Most Difficult To Play Against " which is a testament to both his skill and compete level.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, the former Erie Otter star, was second at 23.7 %.

More than the contemporary findings of the NHLPA in the various categories, I found their historical ratings of interest.

When asked  ' Who is the best forward of all time ? ', they listed 1 through 5; Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Jaromir Jagr & Peter Forsberg.

I was surprised not to see Gordie Howe on that list....or Bobby Hull for that matter.

And when asked, ' Who is the best defenceman of all time ? ', the ranking was Bobby Orr, Nicklas Lidstrom, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey & Scott Niedermayer.

Bobby Orr is a given and the other 4 were elite NHL defenders.....but no Denis Potvin ?

And no Doug Harvey ?

Maybe it's my age showing, but the responses to the NHLPA Players Poll should open all kinds of debate.

I'm Fred Wallace
