Running The Table

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Curling season is coming to a climatic wrap up with various World and National Championships being conducted.

On April 2nd, the Canadian Masters Curling Championship will commence at Surrey & White Rock, British Columbia.

The Al Hutchinson rink from the Paisley Curling Club will be competing at the Masters Championship representing Ontario as Provincial Champions.

The route to the Nationals was certainly eventful for Hutchinson and his rink mates.

To begin, the Hutchinson rink included Les Shane of Kincardine, Gary Cobean from Paisley & Hanover's Don Shane.

But in the first end at the Ontario Seniors this year, Don Shane tumbled and broke his wrist, so he's been replaced by Kevin Daniel from Alliston.

Then at the Provincial Masters, the Hutchinson rink encountered a unique scenario as they were forced into a lengthy sequence of elimination matches.

Hutchinson won his final round robin game to stay alive
Hutchinson won the first tiebreaker.
Hutchinson won the SECOND tie breaker
Hutchinson won the Semifinal
& Hutchinson won the Championship

Five consecutive do or die games later, and the Paisley rink earned the right to represent Ontario at the Canadian Masters Championship which begin early next week.

It's hard to imagine after losing rink members and surviving the Ontario elimination cliff, but if anything, the Canadian Championships might be tougher for the Al Hutchinson rink.
