Kincardine Native Wins OHL Humanitarian Award

Length:

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Ontario Hockey League announced last week that Guelph Storm captain Garrett McFadden was the winner of the Dan Snyder Memorial Award for a second consecutive year.

McFadden who is from Kincardine and graduated both from their Minor Hockey ranks and the Grey Bruce Highlanders AAA program was selected on the burgeoning success of " McFadden's Movement ", a very personal campaign that addresses mental health & well being for youth.

It's somewhat fitting that McFadden is linked with Snyder even though their respective community acts and hockey careers in the OHL are separated by 2 decades.

And what should not be overlooked when connecting Garrett McFadden & Dan Snyder is the fact that both were terrific players.

My best memories of Dan Snyder with the Owen Sound Platers was actually during a horrid stretch in 1998 in which the Platers won 2 of 10 games.

Yet in those 10 games, Snyder was selected as a game star 7 times.  The team may have been struggling, but Snyder pushed on and on leading his team and by the playoffs of 1998, Owen Sound was tough to beat.

As for McFadden, the enduring on ice image I have is from Game 4 of the 2015 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

The Owen Sound Attack were within 90 seconds of tying the series at 2 games apiece, holding a 1 goal lead on home ice AND on the power play, when McFadden, shorthanded, dumped the puck into the left wing corner, pursued it, and as the puck bounced off the boards & came back out in mid-air, McFadden took a backhanded baseball bat swing and knocked it past the startled Attack goalie, shocking Attack fans. Guelph won that game in overtime and went on to win the series in 5.

Dan Snyder. Garrett McFadden. Off the Ice. And on the ice. It's a very good 20 year parallel.

I'm Fred Wallace
