Bench Talk / Off The Wire

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

As we mentioned last week, there are a number of major fastball events on the horizon both in our region and just beyond.

We're about 10 days away from the Ontario Amateur Under 19 Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park in Owen Sound.

The OASA has released the list of 14 teams and the schedule for both the " A  " & the " B " Tournaments which will run simultaneously that weekend.

In the " A " Division, Shallow Lake, Belmore & Chepstow are among the field of 8 teams competing and they'll play their opening games on Saturday July 28th at 11 am.

Ironically, Belmore & Chepstow who are located less than 20 miles apart will go head to head in their opening match.

In the " B " Division, there's 6 teams competing including Tara who will play their opener July 28th, also at 11 am on Duncan North against Burgessville.

Play in both divisions will run through Saturday the 28th and climax on July 29th with the Championship Games in both categories.

It's notable that a year from now in August of 2019, the Softball Canada U19 will be in Owen Sound.

Meanwhile, the 72nd annual ISC World Tournament begins Saturday, August 11th & runs to the 18th at the Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener.

Last week, the ISC released their Top 16 ranking for the 32 team event.

The # 1 seed for the tournament is Six Nations Hill United Chiefs.

Not surprisingly, since the tournament is in Ontario, there are 18 entries from the province in the field of 32 teams

The closest entry to us is likely the Elmira Expos, and while there is no Owen Sound or Grey Bruce team, there will be plenty of players from our region competing.

I'm Fred Wallace
