Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
It's back; the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League returns to Meaford tonight as the Knights play their home opener in this their 6th season.
Tonight it's a Grey Bruce matchup as the Knights will host the Wiarton Schooners at the Meaford & St Vincent Community Centre.
I've been at the Meaford games for 4 of the 5 years and I rather enjoy the team and the level of play.
Aside from the start of their second season, which were indeed dark days, the Knights have played .500 hockey, or above, every season.
The GMHL is a unique league with several transparent quirks, one of which is the stacking of teams, teams that are often operated under league ownership.
I've said many times that it's a rare night that the Knights ice the best players in a game, yet here they are in Year 6 with a record of 1 & 1 heading to tonight's game against the Schooners who are 0 & 4 after playing 3 of their first 4 matches on the road.
The other reason I like the Knights of Meaford is the level of community support they get.
- My understanding is their fan base is among the tops in the league.
- Even people who don't go, or can't go, to the games seem to know all about them
- and, based on the list of corporate sponsors I'm instructed to read each night, it's obvious the business community is behind them as well.
So tonight at 7:30 pm at the Meaford & St Vincent Community Centre, the first home game of Year 6 is scheduled as the Knights of Meaford host the Wiarton Schooners.
