What's The Deal ?

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

There have been some perplexing deals in the Ontario Hockey League this season- actually every time Flint, a.k.a. The Ontario Hockey League, makes a deal with the London Knights, I find myself saying ' are you kidding ?! '

More on that another day......

For today, I remain puzzled by the Sarnia-North Bay deal this week where overage defender Theo Calvas was dealt by the Sting to the Battalion for a 5th rounder and a conditional pick.

Sarnia had the same scenario Owen Sound currently does, too many overagers, yet I was surprised that it was Calvas who was dispatched from the group 4 at Sarnia, I was even more curious at the price North Bay paid, which seemed low to me.

This may explain to a certain extent why the Owen Sound Attack still have 4 overagers in camp.

In their hearts, I'm certain the Attack want to move quickly, primarily for the sake of the departing overage.

That's fair. That's right.

However in reality, if the return price is deemed low or unacceptable, is a deal worth doing ?

The Owen Sound situation gets somewhat cloudier with the potential of a transaction involving an overager, not one of the existing four, but rather........ Jonah Gadjovich.

Gadjovich who has not suited up for either AHL game for the Utica Comets, is on Owen Sound's roster. However, by mid-November OHL teams have to cut down to a maximum of 4 overagers.

So what's the better the rights to Gadjovich in the next month for future considerations or drop him from the roster in mid-November and have someone scoop his rights up for free ?

Furthermore, what if, what IF, the season in Owen Sound goes sideways, or downhill, and suddenly there's a red hot market for either or both Sean Durzi and Kevin Hancock ?

In that scenario, the Attack may be thankful they didn't make a deal in mid-October just for the sake of maintaining a tidy roster of three 1998 births.

I'm Fred Wallace
