Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Team of the Century

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

The Owen Sound Attack are at London tonight to face the Knights.

London was also at home last night against Mississauga on an evening that was highlighted by the celebrating the " CHL Team of the Century ",  the 2005 Memorial Cup Champion Knights.

As part of the promotion, the Knights asked their fans and supporters to recall their favorite memory of that 2005 team.

I'm neither a fan nor a supporter, but I couldn't help bring up Sunday January 9th, 2005.

The Owen Sound Attack were in London to face the Knights that afternoon & Owen Sound was on a good roll.

Heading into the game, the Attack had won 10 in a row plus, in their previous 15 games, Owen Sound had 14 wins and a tie ( remember this 2005 we're talking about )

Playing well on the road, Igor Gongalsky, Stefan Ruzicka, Brad Richardson & Colin Hanley had given the Attack a 4-3 lead with less than a minute to play.

With the Knights net empty, Danny Syvret slid into position at the left wing faceoff dot in the Owen Sound end and wired a well executed set up to tie the affair & force overtime.

In OT, just 22 seconds away from getting a tie, Dylan Hunter scored his 2nd of the game to win it for London.

In spite of the loss, Owen Sound had points in 16 straight games, 14 of which were victories and the Attack brass honestly felt they were legitimate contenders, very close to being every bit as good as the Knights.

That night the fax machine in the Attack office, like a nightmare, confirmed that London had acquired goalkeeper Adam Dennis from Guelph plus sniper Danny Fritsche from Sarnia, bolstering a lineup that would go on to capture the 2005 Memorial Cup and became the CHL Team of the Century.

It's not a favorite memory, but it was certainly memorable and goes a long way towards explaining the state of affairs in the Ontario Hockey 14 years later.

Have a great weekend.

I'm Fred Wallace
