Bench Talk / Off The Wire

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

The National Junior Hockey Team Selection Camp opens today at Victoria, BC and features two members of the Owen Sound Attack among the group of 34 players trying for a spot on Team Canada.

Defenceman Markus Phillips & forward Nick Suzuki, like almost every Junior across the country, are chasing their dream this week, competing to land a spot on the Hockey Canada roster for the World Junior Championship which will be hosted this year in Victoria & Vancouver.

Phillips and Suzuki are within reach of their dream target, not based on a dreaming, but rather backed by solid hockey resumes.

Both players were selected in the first round of the 2015 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection by the Attack and not coincidentally the last 3 & 1/2 years in Owen Sound have been good years for the club.

And while the Attack have had a high rate of success as a team, individually both players have made an impression.

Phillips who has played for Canada in international competition before, in fact was a National captain, he's one of just 2 defenceman in the OHL to be invited to the camp which speaks volumes.

In the case of Suzuki who was a late cut last year by Team Canada, he's scored and accumulated points at a pace that has him on the verge of being an all time franchise leader.

Yes, we could go deeply into a discussion on how an Attack transaction involving either Phillips or Suzuki, or both, would certainly accelerate what looks to be a rebuild for the Owen Sound franchise.

But rather, let's just enjoy the week knowing that two players who have played close to 450 games for the Owen Sound Attack have a shot at representing the team, city and region on the greatest stage in Junior Hockey.
