We're 11 days from Christmas & the good news is that I've finished my cards and got them in the mail, hoping Canada Post can get them where they're destined to go.
For the last decade or so, I've enlisted Lisa Olesen to create a card for me based around a picture from years gone by.
For the 2018 photo, I went back 45 years to the 1973 Huron Park Elementary Boys Softball team.
In June of 1973, Huron Park won the Midland Elementary School Championship and then followed by winning the Region 4 Championship in Simcoe County.
What's fascinating to me, all these years later, is that the Midland Championship was a 1-0 victory over arch rival Regent Public. I find it remarkable that 2 teams of 12 & 13 year olds could play a 1-0 ball game over 7 innings.
The Region 4 Championship Game, staged at the old Victoria Harbour Ball Diamond, was what you might expect from elementary schoolers, a 13-7 win for Huron Park over Waubaushene.
Now, 45 years later, I look at that picture and in the front row I see Mike Abram the Principal at Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie, Doug Maughan who's worked at Ogilvie Mills since Grade 12, lefthanded pitcher Paul Bentley who resides in Meaford, Christian Wright who played NCAA Hockey & Jimmy Hansford who was working at Franke the last time I encountered him.
In the back row is our Teacher-Coach, the late Gary Price, and beside him, Richard Hentzal, catcher Kenny Thompson who operates a Snappd franchise out east, Frank Palmer who's the Treasurer for the OMHA, Bruce Strathearn who's older brother is now the Mayor of Midland and Phillip Wahab who scored the winning run that day in the 1-0 win over Regent.
On a yearly basis, I get a lot of reaction to the Lisa Olesen designed Christmas Cards, but this year, like many years, I'm fairly certain it's really a gift to myself.
Have a great weekend.
