Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
Tonight is the proverbial " circle the date on your calendar " night as the Owen Sound Attack go against the Storm in the Ontario Hockey League action at Guelph.
We all know the background.......
In 2 separate Ontario Hockey League trades, the Attack first shipped defenceman Markus Phillips and then followed with a blockbuster by dispatching Sean Durzi, Zach Roberts and Nick Suzuki to the Storm.
Guelph got the immediate future. Owen Sound got the promise of tomorrow with forwards Barret Kirwin & Zach Poirier plus defender Mark Woolley.....and also of significance, the Attack accumulated 10 draft picks.
Some people love this trade- most of them reside in Guelph.
Others hate this transaction- most of them are listening to this feature.
And the players- well, I think tonight will be an awkward scenario.
But since we're circling dates, let's pull out some previous calendars starting in the year 2014.
In 2014, Guelph won the Ontario Hockey League Championship....and should have won the Memorial Cup but faltered in the Championship Game.
In the years that followed Guelph eliminated Owen Sound and lost to the Soo in 2015, missed the playoffs entirely in 2016 & 2017 and then were eliminated in 6 games last year by Kitchener.
Since winning the Robertson Cup, Guelph has played 16 playoff games over 4 years. winning 7.
By comparison, over that same stretch, Owen Sound played 39 playoff games, with a record of 20 & 19.
I know, I know, I know,...... Guelph is the franchise of the moment.
But if you were in the Attack skates, would you trade the last 3 years, or would you trade the possibility of the next 3 years, for what appears to me to be a bright, but maybe brief, run for the Storm in the short term ?
