Bench Talk / Off The Wire

# 2,000

Fred

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

It is a milestone night for the Owen Sound Ontario Hockey League franchise as the Attack are at Guelph to meet the Storm this evening.

Tonight will mark Game # 2,000 for the Owen Sound entry, ironically against the city from whence they came; Guelph.

In June of 1989, the Guelph Platers formally shifted operations to Owen Sound and played the next 11 seasons, or 730 regular season games, under the " Plater " moniker, a nod to the Holody Family and their electroplating operation out of Guelph.

In 2000, the Holodys sold to interests out of the city, the city of Owen Sound, as was their contractual right, matched the offer and sold the club in turn to a group of 6 local citizens, known then as the Super 6.

From 2000 to today, the Attack have played 1,269 games, thus when added to the Plater years, that means tonight is Game # 2,000.

Yes, it's somewhat unfortunate that the Attack are somewhat limping into the contest in a downward cycle.

But over the course of 1,999 games we've seen cycles before, and out of those cycles came upswings that included Jeff Perry's overtime goal at Sudbury, Andrew Brunette's 48 game point streak, Curtis Sanford's 13 playoff wins, Bobby Ryan being selected 2nd overall in the NHL Entry Draft, a Championship season in 2011 and just 2 years ago, a franchise record for points.

So the Attack can approach Franchise Game 2,000 tonight with a measure of pride over what's transpired through the years, and certainly with a large measure of determination to get back on the upswing for the games just ahead and for the next 2,000 games on the horizon.

I'm Fred Wallace
