Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Pivotal Match

Fred

By Fred Wallace

 Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

There were two games in the Ontario Hockey League last night;

Up north, the Sudbury Wolves doubled the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds 4-2

Meanwhile in the Midwest Division last night at Erie, the Kitchener Rangers smashed the Erie Otters 8-4.

The fallout from the Erie-Kitchener game for the Owen Sound Attack means 1) Kitchener moves to 51 points, tied with Sarnia and just 1 point back of the Attack for 5th in the Western Conference & 2) Erie remains 10 points back of the Attack reducing Owen Sound's magic number to clinch a playoff spot for a 9th consecutive year to 13.5

The Attack launch a stretch of 3 games in 3 nights tonight when they travel one county over to meet the Barrie Colts.

The Colts are in the Eastern Conference while the Attack are in the Western Conference but based on geographic proximity the two Highway 26 OHL rivals meet 6 times a year and the success of their respective seasons often is determined by the outcome of their head-to-head meetings.

To this point, the home team has won every outing; Barrie has won 2 of the 3 meetings while the Attack have won once at the JD McArthur Arena.

And while Owen Sound against Barrie factors in the grand scheme of things, in the short term, the previous results mean very little as the rosters of both teams have been shaved significantly via trades and taking a long term approach to what's ahead for both organizations.

In the short term, the Colts find themselves outside of the playoff picture, 5 points back of Peterborough, North Bay & Hamilton who share the final 3 playoff positions in the Eastern Conference.

The Attack as mentioned above are involved in a swirling derby of teams that includes Sarnia & Kitchener, and to a certain extent, Windsor and Erie.

So obviously tonight's Attack-Colts result at Barrie is critical to both clubs.

I'm Fred Wallace
