The Dance

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Today we're going to talk about....dancing.

It's March Break for youngsters in the Bluewater District School Board and on Thursday night there's a Teen Dance at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.

The dance is being conducted by the Under 16 Selects Fastball team, the first in a sequence of dances they've scheduled as fundraisers to assist with the operation and plans for the upcoming season.

The Under 16 Selects will be hosting a tournament June 5th-7th plus they have bigger aspirations to be in Biggar, Saskatchewan this Summer for the Western Canadian Under 16 Championship Tournament.

Taking more than a dozen youngsters to the Prairies is an expensive undertaking, and thus the dances and tournament are being used as methods to defray the cost involved.

Pretty smart.

I've told you a million times about an experience I had with a Midget Hockey team in the middle of the 1970's.

But along with the on ice memories from that season, the guys I'm still in touch with also talk about the fundraisers; we painted ladders for Bell Canada, we ran a Time-Of-The-Last-Goal Stanley Cup Pool ( my sister won $ 500 ), there was rummage sales and bingo events, plus one night at the Midland Armouries we had a Teen Dance & the band was fronted by Charity Brown.

I still have her autograph, plus a great memory of how much fun that night was so long ago.

So I'm sure the dance on Thursday night will be great fun, but maybe most enjoyable for the U16 Selects.

I'm Fred Wallace
