Here We Go Again...

Fred

By Fred Wallace

For the 7th time in 30 years and for the third consecutive year, the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds and Owen Sound will meet in an Ontario Hockey League Playoff Series.

The Platers had the first two meetings against the Greyhounds, getting wiped out in the second round of the 1993 playoffs in 4 straight games by the Memorial Cup bound Soo squad.

Six years later, the Platers prevailed beating the Sault in 5.

Then there was a 14 year absence, but the two sides have certainly made up for lost time as this will be the 5th Attack-Greyhounds series in the last 7 years.

In 2013, the Attack won in 6, clinching at the Sault.

The following year, Owen Sound took the opener in overtime on the road, but the Greyhounds put together 4 straight wins to take it in 5 games.

After a 2 year break, Owen Sound & the Soo met again with Owen Sound scoring the upset win in 6 games in 2017, clinching with a 1-0 win on home ice.

And then last year, 7 back-and-forth matches that climaxed with a wacky 9-7 win for the Greyhounds.

All of which brings us to this year, just one year later and the difference between the two clubs from 2018 makes the Greyhounds the heavy favorites.

Three of the top 5 performers for the Greyhounds last year, Hayton, Frost & Howdeshell are back for another set.

Meanwhile, of Owen Sound's top 6 shooters from last year, Jonah Gadjovich has moved on to the pros while the other 5, while still OHL'ers play elsewhere in the league.

But that's only how it looks on paper and previous history means nothing once the puck drops tonight at 7:07 pm.
