Bench Talk / Off The Wire

The Collingwood Connection

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League Western Conference Quarterfinal between the Owen Sound Attack & the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds goes tonight at 7 pm at the JD McArthur Arena.

The two clubs split the opening 2 games of their seemingly annual playoff matchup with each team winning once at the Soo.

The Attack now have home ice advantange for Games 3 & 4 of the series tonight & Wednesday

Speaking of the OHL.....

Late in the regular season when the Barrie Colts made their final visit of the regular season in Owen Sound, the talk got around to the Collingwood Colts.

The Collingwood Colts are the new Ontario Junior Hockey League club that will be operated out of the Eddie Bush Arena next season by a partnership between Dave Steele and Barrie Colts owner Howie Campbell.

From Barrie's standpoint, they believe this will be an exceptional opportunity for everyone and the vision they have would be to have 2 of their borderline OHL underagers play in Collingwood along with some other young Barrie prospects for development.

Barrie & Collingwood are connected by Highway 26 and the distance between the Eddie Bush in Collingwood & the Molson Centre in Barrie is an hour, or less, depending on the traffic

This means the Barrie Colts can practice and the brass could also make a quick trip to keep an eye on their prospects.

Furthermore, if need be through injury, ailment or whatever, getting a Collingwood Colt into Barrie for an OHL Colts game would also be a simple & short trip.

Periodically, the Owen Sound Attack lament the lack of a true affiliate.

In the past, Owen Sound has prospered by having prospects play at Newmarket & Georgetown to name a couple of examples. But those centres aren't nearly as close to Owen Sound as Collingwood.

So.... could the Attack, would the Attack, inquire about placing a couple of prospects on the Collingwood Colts ?

And would such an arrangement be beneficial to all ?

Probably not. And probably not.

We'll see you at the Bayshore tonight for Game 3 between the Attack & Greyhounds.

I'm Fred Wallace
