Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Lucy's Football & The Great Pumpkin

Fred

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

It's that time of the year, Spring has arrived and the Toronto Blue Jays are in Montreal playing pre-season Major League Baseball.

The Jays conclude a 2 game exhibition set with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight and then head to Toronto, at top speed, for their season and home openers on Thursday afternoon against the Detroit Tigers.

It's an annual affair these games in Montreal and as certain as the days get longer and warmer, you can bet these 2 games will yet again revive the notion that Major League Baseball belongs and can prosper in Montreal.

I don't buy it, never have.

I'm not sure what these games at Olympic Stadium are specifically designed to do, but my perspective is that it's similar to watching Lucy hold the football for Charlie Brown to kick.

If you followed the Peanuts cartoons, you knew year after year, Lucy would yank the ball away from poor Charlie Brown just as he went to kick it and poor Charlie Brown would end up in a heap, fooled again.

It's the same with this baseball charade.

The Jays come. The fans come. The exhibition games are played and there is hope, yet again, that Major League Baseball will return.

To use more Peanuts analogy, it's like Linus waiting for The Great Pumpkin.

At some point you've got to clue in and realize it's not going to happen.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it happen.

I'm not so old that I don't remember Jarry Park, Gene Mauch, John Boccabella, the great seasons of 1979, 80 & 81 or the heartbreak of the strike interrupted 1994 season.

But I'm not about to kick Lucy's football or join Linus in the Pumpkin Patch.

Enjoy the Jays-Brewers tonight and we'll see you next March in Montreal.

I'm Fred Wallace
