Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
It's officially Junior Hockey season in Ontario with a slate of games, the first set for tonight, plus a sequence of hockey operations updates delivered.
There's no question, the most staggering news release came from Barrie this week where the Colts of the Ontario Hockey League reported that long time Head Coach Dale Hawerchuk is stepping aside to deal with a health issue.
While the Colts, understandably, did not get into specifics, it's understood that the challenge facing Hawerchuk is significant, and the hope league wide and hockey wide is that he'll meet and beat the challenge in the same fashion he did when he was a young star in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets.
On another coaching front, the Knights of Meaford of the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League announced yesterday that former NHL forward Todd Elik is their new head coach
Elik played more than 400 games in the NHL and also has a lengthy resume of experience in European Leagues in Austria and Switzerland.
The Knights begin Greater Metro Junior Hockey League play on September 19th when they visit New Tecumseth.
Tonight, New Tecumseth plays their season opener when they host the Bradford Bulls
Tomorrow night in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, the new Collingwood Colts play their first game when they visit the Trenton Golden Hawks..
And Saturday in Kincardine, the Bulldogs will host a 4 team PJHL Exhibition event.
The Walkerton Hawks, Stayner Siskins & Exeter Hawks will participate in the event at the Davidson Centre.
It's Junior Hockey season in Ontario.
