Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The US Open Men's Tennis Championship was won yesterday by Rafael Nadal.

In an epic battle Nadal survived to defeat Daniil Medvedev in 5 sets to claim the Championship and earn his 19th Grand Slam title.

I do think that it's fair to say that as compelling as the Men's Final was, the degree of interest in this country was minimal when compared to the Women's Final.

Saturday was the big story in Canada, not just in tennis, but also in Canadian Sports History, as Bianca Andreescu won the Women's Final sweeping Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5.

On Saturday morning when I was at MacDonald's Furniture in Meaford, Andreescu was a perpetual topic of conversation prior to her Grand Slam Final against Williams.

Saturday night when I was at Hanover Raceway, Andreescu was a perpetual topic of conversation following her Grand Slam Final victory over Williams.

It truly is historic.

At age 19, seemingly with an unlimited horizon for stardom, Andreescu is the FIRST Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title.

There's no question, Andreescu earned & deserved the title, bending at times along the route, but never breaking on one of the biggest stages in pro tennis.

And the capper, Andreescu defeated Serena Williams, acknowledged in many circles as the best of all time, for the Championship.

It's sweet. It's remarkable. And it rates consideration as one of the greatest Canadian Sports moments in my lifetime.

Paul Henderson's goal.

Joe Carter's Home Run.

Donovan Bailey's Gold Medal in the Olympic 100 metres.

Mike Weir's Masters Victory

Kawhi Leonard's buzzer beater against Philadelphia and the subsequent Raptors NBA title.

And now.......Bianca Andreescu wins the US Open.

I'm Fred Wallace
