A career night from David Purcey wasn't enough to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to victory.
Matt Garza and two relievers combined on a six-hitter and Carlos Pena homered to lead AL East-leading Tampa Bay past Toronto 1-0.
Garza allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 7 2-3 innings for the Rays.
Dan Wheeler pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.
Toronto's quiet bats ruined a fantastic outing from Purcey.
The rookie left-hander went the distance, striking out a career-high 11 in defeat.
Pena provided the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth, his 27th of the season and sixth over his past 13 games.

Talented trotting fillies to show off at Hanover Saturday
HANOVER, AUG. 26, 2008 — A total of $120,000 is on the line at Hanover Raceway on Saturday night as the three-year-old trotting fillies prepare to battle in their fourth Grassroots event.
Owen Sound native Larry Walker will harness two fillies in Saturday’s contest, and the veteran trainer is hoping his consistent duo can earn a share of the Grassroots purse money. Good Common Cents will start from Post 5 in the eighth race and Pretty Paco gets Post 6 in Race 7.
“She seems to get a cheque every where she goes,” says Walker of Good Common Cents. “Sometimes she doesn’t try as hard as she should; she saves herself for later.”
The Kadabra daughter heads into Saturday’s skirmish off a very impressive effort in the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association (SBOA) Stake Final at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 22, where she sprinted down the stretch to a fourth-place finish in 1:56.1. Good Common Cents earned her berth in the SBOA Final with a 1:58 victory in the elimination round on Aug. 15.
“She raced good,” notes Walker. “She’s had good posts at Mohawk. She hasn’t had good posts at the small tracks.”
In her seven starts away from Mohawk, Good Common Cents has started from the outer half of the starting gate six times, the most recent coming in the Aug. 7 Grassroots event at Hiawatha Horse Park, where she was saddled with Post 8. In spite of her shortage of luck in the post position draws the filly has scored one win, one second and one fourth in Grassroots action for a total of 83 points and sole ownership of sixth spot in the division standings.
If Good Common Cents can pad her point total with a strong finish at Hanover on Saturday, Walker may give her a shot at the Gold Series fillies later in the season.
“If she can get enough points to make the Grassroots Semifinal, I might try the Gold at Flamboro,” explains the Morriston resident, who trains Good Common Cents for breeder Charles Armstrong of Brampton.
“If we could just get rid of some of those better ones,” he adds wryly. “And some of them might not go to the half-mile.”
While Good Common Cents has already demonstrated that she belongs among Ontario’s best, Walker says Pretty Paco still has to prove she has what it takes to compete on the Grassroots circuit. Through her first three provincial outings the Yankee Paco lass has one fourth and one fifth to her credit for a total of 13 points, well short of the cut off for the Grassroots post season.
“I don’t know whether she’s good enough,” says Walker. “But she’s honest and she usually gets a cheque.”
Tom Rupert of Simcoe bred Pretty Paco and shares ownership of the filly with Oaklea Farm Inc. of Waterford. The filly heads into Saturday’s contest off an Aug. 20 win at the Hanover oval that saw her carve out most of the fractions and hang on for a neck victory in 2:04.2. Unfortunately, Pretty Paco faces Dream Of Glory champion Random Solution in the ninth race and Walker figures that filly will be tough to beat.
“That race is probably already taken care of. We’re probably just racing for a cheque,” admits the horseman. “We’ll follow along and try and get some.”
Random Solution will be looking for her third straight victory over the Hanover oval from Post 5 in Saturday’s ninth race. The Angus Hall daughter, trained by former Walkerton resident Randy Fritz, swept through the Dream Of Glory Stake with a five length victory in her elimination and a 1:59.3 score in the $100,000 final.
The other four Grassroots divisions will go postward as Races 2, 3, 5, and 6 on Hanover Raceway’s Saturday evening program, which gets under way at 7:25 pm.

NASCAR has placed Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards on probation for the next six races in the Sprint Cup Series.
The penalties are a result of their on-track incident last Saturday at the conclusion of the race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
During the cooldown lap after Edwards took the checkered flag, Busch drove alongside Edwards and bumped his car.
Edwards responded by driving the nose of his car into the right side of Busch's Toyota, spinning him out.

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has decided to play this season rather than have surgery on torn knee ligaments.
The star outside linebacker returned from Miami after seeking yet another opinion on his knee.
Merriman said last week he has two torn ligaments in his left knee.
He's been told by doctors that he could suffer a career-ending injury if he attempts to play without having surgery.

The Owen Sound Attack is thrilled to announce that in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, Sunday, September 14th will be the 2008/2009 Attack Kickoff for Cancer. When the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors visit for the final pre season game, fans will not be required to purchase a ticket and are able to attend the game free of charge, however; a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society is encouraged.
Attack Director of Marketing Brent Fisher stated there are several reasons this was being done by the organization. “First of all, any time you can do something for a cause like the Canadian Cancer Society is great. Second of all, we’re trying to get the ball rolling a little earlier this season and this really gives the fans and the community a chance to come out and get a free taste of what they might see this year while supporting a great cause.”
The festivities will begin with a ceremonial puck drop at 2:00p.m. with the game immediately following. After the game all season ticket holders are invited to attend the first annual meet and greet BBQ that will take place on the west side of the Bayshore. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Drinks will be served up by the members of your 2008/2009 Owen Sound Attack.

Bench Talk/Off The Wire....
Last weekend, and certainly over the last month, there's been great fastball events for men, for ladies, for juniors & for midgets.
From Owen Sound to Quebec to New Brunswick, take your pick.
This weekend, it's baseball in Owen Sound that gets the spotlight as the Ontario Peewee " C " Championship begins tomorrow and runs through the Labour Day weekend, primarily at Tom Williams Park in Owen Sound.
There are 10 teams in the field including the host Owen Sound Peewee squad, a club coach Richard Leblanc has high hopes for.
Talking to Leblanc about the championship tournament, he revealed an interesting development in terms of pitching since I last played baseball in the 70's.
At the Peewee level, there is a pitch count in place and no pitcher can exceed that count.
Personally, I think it's a great rule for two reasons.
From a team standpoint, it means no team can totally ride the arm of a gifted hurler.
If your team isn't deep in pitching, you're going nowhere.
I also like the concept that a pitch count is designed to preserve young arms.
I think we all know guys who had unbelievable curveballs as 12 year olds and now, in their 40's, they have unbelievable throbbing in their wrist and elbow.
The pitch count is an interesting development which should make for an interesting weekend at the Ontario Peewee " C " Baseball Championship.
I'm Fred Wallace
